Our Educational ProgramsCSLR is committed to developing human resources and improving educational opportunities for all people. The focus of our educational efforts is the advancement of knowledge in areas of human language technology. Through a variety of projects, we are attempting to achieve the following outcomes:
Below is a brief description of several educational efforts we are involved in. Follow the links for more complete information about each effort. Portable HLT Curriculum ProjectSupported by an NSF Combined Research and Curriculum Development grant CSLR is leading a multi-university effort to develop a comprehensive and portable curriculum in human language technology. The goal of Portable HLT Curriculum Project is to develop a comprehensive set of laboratory courses that provide the theoretical and practical foundation for training researchers and developers of future human communication systems. These courses incorporate state of the art tools and technologies for learning about, researching and developing human communication systems and their underlying technologies. These courses are intended to be offered in psychology, linguistics, speech and hearing science, computer science and electrical engineering programs. Certificate Program in Human Language TechnologyThe development of these courses has led to an M.S. Certificate Program in Human Language Technology at the University of Colorado offered by the joint efforts of the Center for Spoken Language Research, the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Linguistics, the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Short CoursesCSLR has offered a number of short courses in the past and plans to continue this practice in the future. The next course offering will be titled "Interactive Spoken Dialog System Design: Communicator Short-Course". This course will cover the design and practice of inventing, constructing, and deploying mixed initiative spoken dialog systems. The last time the course was offered it received great reviews. Based on feedback from the attendees, we will be improving the course and offering it again soon. For more information about this course, click here.
